I am looking for a new laptop, of course to put linux on, anyone know of some good laptops for ~600 USD or less? I am also looking for it to have a CPU that I can upgrade rather than it being soldered on.
On a side note, it says ChromeOS as I am using a school laptop.. as I am at my school..
Unless you're buying used or open hardware, you wont find any laptops that the cpu can still be changed out on. the industry has moved on from zif sockets and went to soldered bga sockets because it allows for tighter packaging and superior cooling performance.
one laptop i like that starts in that price range (although with a very crappy screen) is the Dell Latitude e5470. I'd definitely pay the extra money imo to upgrade to the better lcd, but the laptop itself is very nice.

Even Thinkpenguin dot com is having problems with the recent processors.
The older Korora Penguin is a bit out of your price range ($699) but might be of interest. If you want Libreboot, check out minifree dot org or libiquity dot com.
Like Timothy Miller mentioned. I have had real good luck with Dell Laptops myself. Also Samsung laptops have been good to me.
Then there is those pre-installed linux laptops that other members may mention later on this thread. So far. There is nothing I have acquired laptop wise. That I cannot install some Gnu/Linux operating system on. And get everything working. But my gear is not the latest and greatest.
