Hello,

I looked for an alternative to the classic MS Symbol font.

So far I could only find this one (which is a TTF): file Greek_Becker.zip at font101.com. Furthermore I would be pleased to find a TTF for compatibility reasons.

It would be great if there was an open font (TTF format) which is pretty similar to MS Symbol (TTF).

If you have windows still around you could always borrow its font files as well plus most of Microsofts fonts can be downloaded in non executable files from other websites.
These days Microsoft really lays back on its font licencing, even cambria can be used on other OS's without too many strings attached.
Heck Microsoft is quite angelic compared to some of the font licencing costs out there, just look up lexicon.
Yup $4,996 fort a stupid typerface font, thats more money then buying several copies of windows and office or buying just one single macbook that has less features then a chromebook.

MadmanRB, nobody in their right mind would spend that much money on a font for home use.
But, if you have a closer look (enlarging the font to poster size) you will notice many differences.
Differences that can be relevant for certain use cases.
A lot of work goes into font design.

And fortunately nobody's forced to use these fonts.

I rather like to use OS fonts these days (Lucida Console, Droid, Ubuntu...); they are well made, because if you need to sell your stuff you know how important that is.

the problem is that illustrator 8 under linux (with wine) does not like some much the windings,... I prefer to use an open source one that will work all the time. Cross platform and so on. For the word processing, you can make sure to include these open fonts it into your TeX or adanvanced IeX code.

Well to be fair Microsoft gave up on windings, it never worked right even in windows.
