A Petticoat Military: Comedy in Uniform by Fred Reed

I'm am old man and I'm not into the " politically correct nonsense " promoted by our modern day social tinkerers!! Evidently Fred Reed is as old school as I am. Some LQ readers may enjoy this blunt article:

Well, thank you for the opportunity to throw an "un-PC" cliche back at you: stop running down your men and women in uniform! I'll bet that Fred Reed idiot was bleating that and SUPPORT THE TROOPS SUPPORT THE TROOPS SUPPORT THE TROOPS (meaning "don't point out that they might be doing anything counterproductive") during the Abu Ghraib scandal too.

If anyone missed the context of the top post, btw, it's a reaction to two women having successfully become U.S. Army Rangers a few months back.

Better article:

I ran into another on line article about today's politically correct society in regards to children:

The military is the last bastion of bravado (and bragging rights) for the young male of our species ... 18 to 25 years old, please, when your testosterone levels are as high as they will ever be. The first thing that they do to you is to completely grind away your personality and sense of identity so that you will mindlessly "kill or be killed." (If you're lucky: there's a good chance you'll wind up in the VA hospital, instead.) All this so that military contractors can make millions selling sh*t to your outfit for #CLASSIFIED#-times the money.

Nope, sorry. That kind of life was never the thing for me.

But we still love doing it, nationally speaking. We all do, if only for the kickbacks politicians receive from companies who sell equipment, sometimes, to both sides. (Hey, this is Business, you know.)

And today, this military apparatus refuses to admit that in many ways it is completely obsolete. You don't need a battleship or a cruise missile to bring down three tall buildings in New York City: you only need a demolition team and sophisticated explosives, and a little bit of creativity. You don't need an army at all in order to bring a nation of citizens to their knees: you only need the Internet, once again a little creativity, foolish immigration non-immigrant policies and a distracted populace infatuated with toys that can't keep their mouths shut who have no idea how thoroughly they are now being watched . . .

Being a former drafted jarhead. Little do some realize. When we come back from combat. Our outlook on the world is more tolerant than some.

Girls were welcomed in the siege of Stalingrad and in the rice paddies of Viet Nam. Despite ignorant biases.

I have found that complaints of "PC culture" are often--not always, but often--camouflage for a wish to do and say with impunity things that the persons who say them know others will find hurtful.*

But I'm just a cranky old man with no faith in human nature.

_____________

I'll make an exception for some of the "trigger alert" silliness I hear about. Also, don't tell me you want a spoiler alert about the end of Casablanca. It was released in 1942 for Pete's sake.

Also, speaking of pink submarines: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053143/

I was in the Navy and at one point was at a base where watch standing was combined between Navy and Marines. I stood some watches with female Marines. One of them I believe I could've encircled her waist with the fingers of my two hands and touched my fingertips, because her waist was so tiny. Still ... I would've never $#@!'ed with her! I do believe she was tough enough to take me, a fit guy twice her weight ... down! And since it was boring stuff, we were called in to do tasks. I never, ever questioned whether or not she could pick up and carry anything.

Years later I attended different events, one was GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling), my friend thought it would be hilarious. It was because of all the drunks in the crowd. Not one of those ladies was under 6 feet or likely below 200 lbs. The Cheerleader was like an Amazon Woman! The other event was a WNBA game. Same thing just no goofy costumes and they were a coherent team versus individuals.

I've also encountered some female collegiate athletes. They were as tough as nails. Granted an elite male in their prime stands to outdo a female. But given the sampling of male humanity one regularly sees on an everyday basis, these girls far exceeded your average male.

So PC or not, I don't care. I think your outlook is rather narrow. I'm old enough to be a granddad too.

For hundreds, even thousands, of years now the Military has switched from being all about brute force and being more about smart force and division of labor. At one time Kings were the biggest most intimidating ruthless warriors of the tribe and they fought alongside their subjects, and though somehow the "rightness and desirability" of that lingers even today, the simple truth is I'd rather fight under Hannibal of Carthage than Ragnar of Norway because fools rush in and Hannibal knew how to defeat forces many times larger than his own.

I'd rather fight under Eisenhower than either Patton or Montgomery and I recognize that since women grow up with a constant size and strength disadvantage they learn the art of governing from below and when threatened can be more ruthless than most men. In time there will be brilliant female strategists. Count on it. Things just aren't as simple as Male vs/ Female. Gender is not truly binary. Some of the strength of armed forces is in diversity and flexibility as well as having the right skills for the right job. All jobs aren't who can lift more. Give those jobs to the grunts. Even if I'm wrong that the lines between gender are not sharp that would simply mean jobs like pilots (who need to take higher levels of g forces, and women on the whole, do) are still suitable for military and make it stronger.
