Yes, it is a long read but quite interesting. The Wired article it links to is also informative and fills in some gaps that used to be there: https://www.wired.com/story/confessi...-the-internet/

The TCO for Windoze runs higher and higher. When the FBI was mucking around in those M$ Exchange servers the other week, they should have wiped the systems down to the bare metal and installed a proper Dovecot/Postfix setup on top of a GNU/Linux or FreeBSD base.
