I think anything over a Pentium II is considered 686. The tail of each of those files just means that it was optimized for that type of processor. So you kernel headers have stuff all the way back to i386, whereas the 686 probably doesn't use any optimization for older 386, 486, or 586 processors.
i have a Pentium Celeron 3.333GhZ processor and run a i386 iso. I had a problem with the first iso i got, so i downloaded the alternate iso and it works like a charm.
sometimes it wont work the second, third or fourth. remember-windows has a deal with most computer manufacturers and they are designed to run windows. dont give up-the goal is a fully functioning, stable operating system.
