Fedora FC4 -> FC5 update takes forever!

Hi there

My first posting here..hope I get some feedback soon.

About two hours ago I started the FC5 update from CDs. I ran the media check on all of them and all passed. I decided to try updating my FC4 installation rather than do a clean install and it seems to be working but it's going WAY TOO SLOWLY! It's in the "Installing <package>..." phase and the time remaining is still somewhere between 800 and 1200 minutes, goes up and down.

Any idea what might be causing this? My two pervious installs of FC2 and FC4 (both clean installs) ran very smoothly. Well, actually I attempted to go the update path from FC2 but that didn't work, but the clean install was ready in no time.

The only thing I changed now is that I added a 320GB disk, which the install detected and asked if I wanted to format it. Otherwise this is a 700MHz machine with two disks, one 160GB plus the new one.

Hope I hear from you.

Still going? Did you select *all* packages or just a few?

"between 800 and 1200 minutes, goes up and down."

If that doesn't start going down I would think there is something wrong. Course, if you hard reset the machine halfway through the update it may well bork your system. I'd give it some time until it's fairly clear the machine is hung.

Oh, can you switch to a different console and see log messages?
Are the packages being installed switch every once in a while?

This was weird. When I inserted the second CD (after a few hours of very slow progress), it complained that it couldn't find a file, probably due to a faulty CD. I had run the media check on all of them and they all passed, so it was not that. I had only one option and that was to reboot. So I put the first CD in again and decided to try the Upgrade option once more. And this time it ran the whole way but it took a whole day!! I let it run over night.

Everything seems to be working fine now but if anyone knows why this happened, I'm curious to know.

Thanks,
Gísli
