Diskboot.img kernel doesn't recognize usb ethernet
I'm trying to install fc5 on my old Stylistic 3400, one of the very first tablet pc's. i worked forever and got lfs working on it one time before, but i messed up some permissions and couldn't get xfce to work for the user.
long story short, i just decided to give fc5 a try on it with lightweight xfce. no cd drive, and i've lost my usb drive... so i just copied the vmlinuz and initrd onto the tablet's hard drive and booted it with grub. this part works fine.
the problem is that the onboard ethernet has no external port. you have to have a port replicator. so thought i would try a usb ethernet adapter, but the installation kernel doesn't support it apparently. so i tried booting with my lfs kernel (2.6.16) which i configured to support the usb ethernet, but it complains about the root= option not being set properly.
i've tried root=/dev/ram0 and root=/dev/ram.... both with the ramdisk=4860. but no luck. i feel like i should be able to use the kernel i compiled, but i just can't figure out the right parameters.
