Bad burn

Hi,
I downloaded the 3 Yarrow ISO images, verified the md5sum and burnt them onto CDs. When I run the pre-installation CD check, they all come out as "FAILED". Tried reburning the CDs, re-downloaded the images from different servers, tried using different burning software and inspite of all of this (and quite spitefully), I keep getting the "FAILE" message. has anyone had this problem? and if Yes, what was the solution?

Just to answer some Frequently Asked Responses:
- I burnt the contents of the ISO images as opposed to the ISO file itself (I think the fact that I can boot from it and get to the pre-installation CD check screen proves this)
- Downloaded the images from the following servers (removed some "URL"-ish info as the forum tells me I;m too new to post URLs)
ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu
ftp.linux.ncsu.edu
- Used the following burning tools on Windows 2000
Adaptec Eazy CD Creator v 4.02
Veritas RecordNow 4.56
- Checked and confirmed the md5sum before burning the CDs for each ISO images

I would appreciate any info on how I can accomplish this supposed-to-be-very-easy task.

thanks

yeah this is not an isolated case - are u downloading through internet explorer? seems like that is the culprit - even though the download will look right and the cd will burn the iso is never right - i wasted two cds

i have given up burnin the iso's for now - i changed to a network install - i had downloaded the boot floppy img files through IE and it all seemed good even writing to the floppies but the installation failed during initial kernel load - with the img files gotten through ws_ftp set to binary it booted fine

use ftp in binary mode and u shouldnt have a problem -

Thanks for the feedback. I used WS_FTP to download the images every time. Maybe I should consider using another FTP client...anyhow, if I am going to do a network install, I would rather go with SuSE as that is what I have been using until now. I just thought about switching to Fedora because SuSE won't let me download ISO images.

Anyhow, thanks for the help.

sorry - the other alternative is using undisker to extract the files from the .iso image and then burn the files to the cd yourself as a iso9660 disk- pain in the ass though -

Ummm. I downloaded the isos through IE, and they are fine. I think you are FOS by saying it is a IE problem, it uses FTP FFS, if IE would mess it up it wouldnt mess up the ISO, it would mess up the downloading completly.

Maybe you should check your burner, that may be the culprit in this case. All of my FC1 cds burned fine and installed perfectly, but make sure you burn at a SLOW speed. Dont go at 52x and think it wont hurt it, it may well hurt it. Try at 8x or whatnot, and if that doesnt work, burn the ISO's themselves onto some cds, bring them to a friends house with another burner and try it on that.

And if all that dont work, order the cds from fedora.

Thanks Pauli. I tried at 2x on my HP burner and it worked! I can now continue with my installation.

thanks again!

I give up.
The installation freezes everytime anywhere between formatting HD and as lates as instaling "glibc". I also tried the RH 3.0 WS and have same problem. I think I will try another distro and if tht doesn't work, buy another PC to swap with my current PC so I can use my current PC for linux...

Another idea

Just a note about my experience with downloading and burning the Fedora isos. I too got the FAILED message on 2 of the disks.

What I did to get them to PASS was simply defragmenting the files! I have a small partition, about 1 gig, specifically for files I'm going to burn onto CD's, whether they be music, data, or iso's, bin/cues...whatever. The small size of the partition makes it much easier (and faster) to defragment the large iso images. You might want to try it.

thanks but i got the CDs to burn fine (finally).
Now I think there is a problem with the installer interacting with my devices. I wonder whatahppened to the block checker inthe installation...maybe another thred.
