I went back and used this walk through:

Why when I try to install for example xmms, and mplayer I get the following message:

mplayer:
Depends: libdha.so.1.0
Depends: libfribidi.so.0 but it is not installable

any ideas? this also happens when trying to use synaptic to install xmms

FYI I used this walkthough to add repositiories for both yum and synaptic. could there be a conflict?

Also, this is on a new install.
If you read more carefully you will see that http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html is based upon the premise of an "everything" install, in which case your missing dependencies will already be there. In the case where you have not done the full install do a "yum provides missing_dependency" and yum will give you a list of applications that you can install to get that missing dependency. Then do a "yum install that_application" as root to get it.

I installed apt s per the Stanton-Finley instructions and what I immediately liked about it was the gui interface that gives a lot of info about the packages. Unfotunately I also experienced the issues mentioned in this thread, like apt breaking packages and not finding dependencies. Someone said: 'apt is clearly superior' but to be honest I haven't been able to see that sopposed superiority.

If it's that gui you're in love with I invite you to have a look at yumex which you can easily install through yum

# yum -y install yumex

This will give you a great gui tool to choose at every install the repos you wish to use and also provides package info about updates and available packages. It will also save you the trouble of setting up the repos by yourself.
