yum

Is there a graphical front end for yum, like synaptic for apt-get?

Try yumex and gyum. Personally I don't think any of them are as good as synaptic.

I have also heard that there is a variation of apt for fedora, and that it will work with synaptic. Is there a reason to use yum over the fedora apt/synaptic combo?

You can also use kyum from:
http://fedoraproject.org/extras/4/i386/repodata/

KYum is a graphical user frontend (GUI) for yum. You can use it to modify your repository files and to control the most common operations of yum.
