i installed fc5 last night at home and did a yum update (or upgrade, dont remember now). but it was going to download like 800+meg of files so i left it and did not check it this morning. did this upgrade my system to fc6 test 1? how do i accomplish that? yum dist-upgrade?
im currently downloading fc6 test 1 but have fc5 and if i dont need to download those i dont want to
No that sounds about right for updates. Mine was roughly 800 megs or so when i did a yum update in terminal after a fresh install. If you are concerned with what is being install you should review the list before installing them to ensure you are only taking what you wish to install or update.
thanks for replying. when i look at the list of things being updated it doesnt have what core 6 test 1 should have, like gnome 2.15 or kde 3.5.3. it looks like it is just updating the core 5 packages to whatever they are currently, not actually doing a distribution upgrade. is this possible with yum? should i install apt and synaptic? or do i need the core 6 test 1 cds and do an upgrade that way? im sure the developers would want to know of any issues with doing upgrades like that though
Yes, upgrade or update, just brings your current OS up to latest packages.
Going from FC5 to FC6 is a change in OS not an update.
I think there are ways of doing it with yum, but a fresh install with new cd's/dvd is probably the best way, (well the way I'd go anyway)
I've done an upgrade from FC4 to FC5 for a friend, using yum, and it worked like a charm. I don't think it could have been any better using install cds (the "upgrade" option, nor a fresh install which would need BIG backups). Haven't tried with FC5->FC6 yet, but I don't think it's that big a deal unless there's something really new in 6. With 4->5 it was a matter of altering Yum configuration/reposities, installing a certain package and doing a complete update/upgrade.
Though, if you have a lot of free discs lying around and are ready to burn them and run the installer from discs, it's definitely less time-taking.
I've done the distro dance for years and finally got fed up. Just go with CentOS 4.3 and live life to the fullest. There are extra repos out there to add anything you want to it and it compiles stuff like a dream. No crash, no mash.
BTW, I was at MSFT in Charlotte from 94 'til 2002. My email was EricHe. We may have crossed paths.
