Unable find software in gnome since installing

Hi all,

I recently went back to FC5 from XP.

I decided to customize my installation packages before the install.

Some things were left out such as hal-gnome.

I decided to install this manually myself, but then the only way of accessing it was to run /usr/bin/hal-gnome (i think).

I also had to add the icon manually. Is there any way after you add gui software/tools for it to be put into the menu automatically?

Thanks,
lionheart

Most packages (those you install using Yum or some other package manager) you pick up will insert menu entries. Some of them may only appear after a logout+login (or gnome-panel kill), though. But if such thing happens, then the rpm you install from must include some information about how it's done; if you just go ahead and install some package that doesn't necessarily have such a behaviour, you won't get menu icons etc.

And then again: it isn't so difficult to add them by yourself, unless you install 500+ programs a day. I know a lot of newbies do that (...) but after a certain period of time you get used to certain programs and don't install new software every day, after which it's quite all the same if the package installs menu entries or not.

You can use alacarte for customising menu items
