trouble with mysql after Fedora installation

I've just installed fedora core 3 and want to set up mysql and phpMyAdmin so i can work on the stuff we do in my programming class at school. whenever i try to connect with mysql in phpMyAdmin or anyhting else it gives me this error message:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

i just looked and there is no /var/lib/mysql/ folder

do i have to setup something or configure some file?

can anyone tell me what direction i should go in
i apreciate any help you can offer

I had a similar problem once with FreeBSD. Remove mysql and reinstall it. Since you are going to program something using mysql (php?), make sure that you have both mysql _client_ and _server_ installed.

Good luck!

do you mean go to 'Add/Remove Applications', because when i do and uncheck 'MySQL Database' and hit update, it says i'm missing a bunch of packages(which seems odd to me...). Is there another way to uninstall it?
oh, by the way, i have httpd and php installed and they work fine
