Step to build the kernel for Fedora Core 3

Hi
I have Fedora core 3 running.
I am installing the new OC3 NIC card driver and the user guide says that I need to configure the kernel before installing it. Can anyone verify if my steps are correct:
1- Get kernel source
kernel-2.6.9-1.667.src.rpm
2- rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.9-1.667.src.rpm
3- cd to /usr/src/SPECS
4- rpmbuild -v-bp --target=i686 kernel-2.6.spec
5- ln -s /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9/linux-2.6.9 /usr/src/linux
6- cd /usr/src/linux/
7- make mrproper
8- cp config/kernel-2.6.9-i686.config ./config
9- make oldconfig dep
10-Make modules
11-Make modules_install
12-Make install

thanks
Anh

Hi,
After step4 you will be getting Binary RPM of kernel. You only need to install it. Because when you install a kernel src rpm. you will get a lot of patches also to be applied first and then kernel will get compiled. SO if you are getting kernel already compiled then why r u again using make and make install?
Ok you want to change .config file then just after step 2 go to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/ and modify kernel-2.6.9-i686.config and then foloow step 3-4 and then install binary kernel RPM

hi,
Binary rpm means whenever u built a rpm using rpmbuilt u will get binary rpm and then u will use it. same here also. why i am asking u that because original red hat kenrel contains a lot of modified kernel compare to vanilla one from www.kernel.org
