Shutdown X and or GDM

I want to try to install the newest drivers from nvidia, so that my graphics card is properly used, and I have the neat little special effects. I have the script from nvidia. I thought I could shutdown gdm thus: /etc/init.d/gdm stop but there is no gdm there. How do I achieve this? I am running the latest Fedora, 12. What do I have to do to get the option to boot into a shell in grub?

In grub, you can boot to a shell by editing the line specifying the kernel and adding the "3" parameter, even by modifying the grub.conf or by using it interactively at the boot.
But if you don't know this procedure, it's simpler to log on your system as root, and type "runlevel 3" to shut down X servers completely.

One more quicky if I may: how do I shutdown and then restart networking from the command line? I had following problem: here in the library I have a fixed ip address. At home I have dsl. I added a new connection called home, put in my username and password, but it didn't appear in the list of possible connections. However, this morning, now, in the library it is there. So maybe I just needed to restart networking. Reboot seems drastic for that!

I do not know about debian specifics, but usually the network can be shut down by /etc/init.d/network stop.
If not, try opening a new thread as this is quite a different topic from the first one

In debian, use
Code:
/etc/init.d/networking restart

Thanks! I was asking about Fedora, Debian is on the other HD. I like this new Fedora. Most things seem to work, which is nice, as I am not an expert!
