Serial Modem Problem on Shutdown

Something happens to the serial modem on my system when I shutdown the system, 'cause next time I reboot, KPPP cannot find the modem and freezes the system? What goes on in the script or kernel when I shutdown and how can I modify it to leave the serial modem alone???

Thanks?

Can you provide more information such as distribution, kernel and serial modem name and manufacturer.
Cheers
Chris

Sorry about the lack of info....here is more:

Gateway m405se Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz

Zonet 5600FM Serial Card v92 56Kpbs Modem

Fedora Core 1 distro
Code:
[roste@localhost roste]$ rpm -qa | grep 'kernel'
kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13
kernel-ntfs-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl
kernel-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl
kernel-utils-2.4-9.1.101.fedora
also, i have a permanent integrated firewire port and a winmodem port in the back of the machine, they are next to each other.

its wierd, machine send all the normal kill and term signals, but when i reboot after a clean shutdown, kppp reads "looking for modem" and freezes. So i crash the machine and kill power, then reboot, and then Kppp works fine???
