SATA Raid 0 and Fedora Core 2
Currently i have installed FC2 on a 10GB Seagate HDD. I am very happy with its performance. So I was wondering whether I should install it on a bigger harddrive. I am thinking of buying a 120GB Seagate SATA HDD. But I read around that FC2 has some problems with RAID. I just am going to use Raid Level 0 and wanted to know whether FC2 will support it out of the box. I havent even upgraded FC2's default 2.6.5 kernel.
Fedora Core 2 currently does not support SATA RAID
FC2 supports RAID, it's just that there aren't any drivers for most of the onboard SATA controllers that support RAID currently. However, if you were to use a card that has support, you can run a SATA RAID array in FC2 just fine. 3Ware has always had great support in Redhat products, and their SATA cards work perfectly in FC2. I am currently running their 8006-2LP card in a couple of machines and it works great.
I'm not sure on the ICH5 chipset supporting RAID in FC2.. but if I had to guess, I'd say probably not. I'm sure it will work with 1 or 2 drives on their own, but I'm guessing that if you created a RAID array, FC2 would still read it as 2 different drives and your install wouldn't work. I know the Silicon Image SATA controllers are that way, and I seem to recall seeing others with Intel controllers that were getting that same problem when I was looking for one that would work (which is what lead me to 3Ware).
So again.. I'm not 100%, but I wouldn't hold my breath on RAID working out of the box.
Support for anything but 3Ware cards is sketchy at best without external drivers. See if Intel has drivers in development for your motherboard, or save yourself the headache and go pick up a 3Ware card.

ok, but what if i dont want raid? What if I just used the SATA drive as a normal non-raid harddrive?(I mean just a harddrive with SATA interface instead of the PATA) Would that be ok with FC2? Would it recognise my hardrive geometry? I heard some linux distros were having trouble recognising geometries over 120GBs...
