root password lost

I have Linux Red hat nash version 4.2.15
I have already searched the forum for the lost root password problems and have hit a dead end.
I followed the instructions on linuxgazette.net/107/tomar.html but after I have booted in 'single' I come to a command line that says 'bash-3.00#' there I enter 'passwd' it prompts me to enter a new root password but after entering the new password I am given the line 'passwd: Authentication token lock busy' from there I hit enter to get 'bash-3.00#' I enter the 'reboot' command restart the computer and the root password is not changed from here I do not know what to do. I want to know if there is something else that is not mentioned in the linux gazette page or if I need to try the knoppix boot to change it.

hi,
Please try out the following steps to change the root password:
1. Boot the computer with Linux Installation CD.
2. Enter into Linux Rescue mode by enering the following command in boot screen.
boot: linux rescue
3. When the sh prompt is reached, enter the following commands to change root password.

#chroot /mnt/sysimage
#passwd

The above steps will prompt you to enter your new password.
and you will get your linux working

Thanks for the information but I ended up getting my kernel to boot in 'single' and changed the root password from there instead of having to boot from disk, which for some reason even after changing the boot order would still not work.
