Question quick question about startup

I have a quick question. When I startup my laptop, a service called 'named' fails. How can I find this so I can fix it? Also if you know how to fix this that would be good too!!! One more for you a service called kudzo fails on my server i was gonna oninstall it and reinstall it but it has a lot of dependencies. Is there any good way to fix that one?

Thanks,

nomb

I think named is a dns-service or something..I'm not sure if you even need it, but check
Code:
man named
or
Code:
man -k named
before taking it out of the boot sequence. Kudzu is your "friend" that keeps an eye on new hardware, and when it locates new hardware attached to your machine, will configure it and maybe ask you some question(s) about it, if needed. So it's very general part of your Linux and should not be uninstalled..try to get some other way around it. In a normal situation you don't need it, but if it's not working, adding a printer (just for example) to your machine's usb or lpt port wouldn't make Fedora notice it (probably).

Try to run kudzu from a terminal and see what happens. Basically you need it only, though, when new hardware is added or you'll want to configure existing hardware.

gotcha named is exactly that. you can edit the /etc/named.conf file and uncomment out a section to make it use ports 53 because the current version uses high level ports. However I have dns inblocked in my firewall and it should go through fine. but it doesn't. is there anyway if i stop iptables that i can issue a command to show me what port is is using? I tried netstat and netstat -p but it doesn't show the actual port.

thanks again,
