printing problems with fedora

My ability to print in my Fedora Core I box has stopped. My deskjet hp5550 is set up properly in cups and with the RedHat config screen from "setup" in a shell. My driver is the hpijs driver for the /dev/usb/lp1 and also the /dev/lp0 . Both are hooked to the printer with the usb as default. Neither one works. When I click on a printing job from any page, nothing happens. When I click on the Print Manager I can see that the job has been sent but on the usb printer icon there is an error symbol and if I use the parallel port, nothing again but no error icon. Well I just printed a test page using the /dev/lp0, with Cups , but the /dev/usb/lp1 says," "Unable to open USB device "usb:/dev/usb/lp1": No such device" and any job sent to usb won't work.
A. How do I use Cups to send all my printing jobs through until I resolve this problem and;
B. How do I resolve this lack of usb throughput?

W e l l now ! I just deleted the /dev/usb/lp1 and added a new printer and it came up as /dev/usb/lp0 and now it's printing test pages and even this page. Could it change the printer settings when I upgrade or is it something I've done w/out realizing it?

The first thing you should do after a successful Redhat/Fedora installation is to turn off the hardware detection wizard "kudzu".

Do
chkconfig kudzu off

It does more harm than good after installation.
