So im wondering if it posible to uninstall the package management from FC5 completely and install the one from FC4? It worked great in fc4 but with this new one nothing i tried worked.
in my opinion and probably in the opinion of many others thier new package management for fc5 really sucks... i had so much to do this weekend it was wasted away trying to get this thing to work... I like the way Fc5 looks and it runs faster but if i cant fix it tonight i think tomarrow im going to try a different distro or switch back to fc4.
I tried solecting all the packages i needed during the initial install but it crapped out each time on one of hte last cds... after wasting hell of a lot of time redoing the install about 5 times i tried it this way but only to run accross this problem.
If someone can please help i would really apreciate it.
I skimmed through that linked thread and didn't really read the article that was linked to within that thread, but my first thought would be to simply disable all repos that aren't CDs. Of course I am assuming that when you refer to the package manager of FC4 you mean the one that used only install CDs and not yumex or up2date or kyum (yes, there are now a few package managers for Fedora).
For the record, I happen to like the new package manager for Fedora. Sure, it has its hiccups from time to time and it is nowhere near the quality of synaptic, but it's not even 1.0 yet, so stability should come with time.
I disabled the repos that werent installing from the cds and it picks up what packages are available but when you go to download them it gives an error that says it cant download the RMP headers. I didnt see a folder on the cd that had headers in it...
To try and fix the problem I installed the newest version of yum, kyum, pirut and even tried Yumex (i like the way yumex looks) but nothing fixed the problem. What should i do now?? Im going to try and install up2date. Does up2date use yum too? Is there an alternative for yum?
1) You should create /etc/yum.repos.d/dvd.repo as root and copy/paste
$ su
# touch /etc/yum.repos.d/dvd.repo
# gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/dvd.repo
Paste in there:
[DVD]
name=Fedora DVD
baseurl=file:///media/disk/
enabled=1
but! I'm not sure how is mounted your dvd. May be you should check it, for properly considering baseurl parameter. I'll check in the evening on my home PC, and correct this post.
Anyway, next u should open all .repo files in your /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory, and change enabled = 0.
Then, before use, before opening Pirut/Yumex/Kyum, be sure that DVD is in drive and mounted.
try this it worked with me :
i made a bac folder in the /etc/yum.repos.d/
moved all the repos files in it the made the same file dvd.repo
just that it all
yeah... it didnt work for me. Im replacing the cdrom and reinstalling. Ive had issues with installing linux before when the cdrom or HD are kinda flakey.
