Question Package Management Issues

Okay, I installed Fedora Core 1 successfully and the stuff installed is giving me no problems. However I have to install a VPN client to use the Internet on non-UNiversity sites, and that requires the linux kernel source code.

I tried to install the package thru Add/Remove Packages in GNOME, and 4 other packages were also going to be installed (as dependancies or something)... so I click okay and everything's going alright until it asks for Disc 2.

I try to eject my CD from the CD Drive, but it doesn't go. Weird. I try, try, try - nothing. Then I try unmounting. It says device is busy. Busy doing what? No other open windows! So I manually eject (I love paper clips) and put CD2 in.

Meanwhile, GNOME gets very unstable and it asks me if I want to terminate the package installer. I say yes. So then I'm back to GNOME - but the computer 'halts' every 5 seconds for some time! Then I go back to Add/Remove Packages and it says that the package was installed successfully (the kernel source one), but I know the dependencies aren't!

Nonetheless I try to recompile my VPN client and it doesn't work. No C compiler either.

My problem is now this: no matter what I do (reboots inclusive), any and all packages I try to install say "Error while installing packages" and I'm really hating Fedora because of it. Sometimes it hangs at the pre-installation 'Checking System Status' pop-up...

Anyone got any clue? Please help... for the sake of a person wishing to switch to Linux, I'd hate for this to be the end (I just started!)

Thanks a lot!

Daniel

I've had problems with add and remove as well.

Now I use yum to manage packages, it resolves conflicts and downloads the latest packages.

It is best on a broadband connection, FedoraNEWS has help on yum:
HOWTO: Use Yum

Using Mirrors:
HOWTO: How to increase yum speed

FedoraNEWS Homepage

To see vnc related packages use:
yum list vnc*

To install vnc viewer use:
yum install vnc

To update all your packages use:
yum update

I hope this helps with add/remove.

For mount adding the lazy '-l' option may help; my drives seem to be busy for no apparent reason as well. Lazy un-mount and closing unused apps often works, it also allows the console to be closed while running umount in the background.

I hope this helps.
