Net Install

I read somewhere in the post in this forum and as advised by Calra Shereoder (forgive me if I misspelled the name) I burnt a ISO boot disk image cd and prepared to upgrade my FC-2 to FC-4 over net. Now it started with usual CD installation screen like enter for graphical mode etc. and after setting up my net configuration and HTTP path and directory path I am stuck by a irritating problem. No matter whatever I choose, it always adds one extra "/" in between the site name and directory path.

Example

Site Name : mirrors.kernel.org
Directory : /fedora/core/4/i386/os/

message is can't find directory path http://mirrors.kernel.org//fedora/co...ora/Mntstg.img

I checked up by directly typing the webpage address- the file is right there. Only problem is the // between org & fedora in the message. Is there any other victim of the circumstances like me ? Please advise.

do not type in the leading slash in the directory name.

i.e.
site name: "mirror.kernel.org"
directory name: "fedora/core/4/i386/os/"

Having had a look at a couple of mirrors, the file that your install claims to be unable to find doesn't seem to exist. I'd suggest that something is going wrong earlier in the install.

have you looked at the instructions on

Billimayday, your suggestion is not clear

Dear Billimayday, I am little bit confused about what you meant by something going wrong in the early installation ? Is it something with the FC-2 installed on the machine you are implying or is it the current installation process? Because the FC-2 is currently running in the subject machine without any problem and so far the boot up with the boot.iso CD is concerned, it is behaving like any other installation CD with usual options etc. and everybit of information I am feeding is tried and tested before hand. That is, the IP configuration is my current running configuration in the FC-2 which is not DHCP because I hard coded this bit with machine IP as 192.168.1.2 and adsl router 192.168.1.1 and DNS as provided by my ISP. So, there is no confusion here. So what left is the FTP/HTTP site name and the directory path which I am giving as given above. Kindly suggest.

regards.

billymayday: you have a point... If I type
http://mirrors.kernel.org//fedora/co...386/os/Fedora/
... into firefox, it processes the url correctly (even with the extra double-slash note). This just provides me with two directories ... one called "RPMS" and the other called "base". The file: "Mntstg.img" is not there.

Googling, produces:
"Your search - Mntstg.img - did not match any documents."
... which is pretty unusual for a routine installation.

However, R_N_Ghosh assures us:

Perhaps R_N_Ghosh could clarify this?

Can you post a link to the howto you are using?

edit - I meant the fc4 install btw

edit 2 - why are you installing fc4 and not something more recent - fc5 or 6?

Billymayday, the url address is here

Hi Billymayday, 1st let me apologize for a silly mistake on my part. The file name is Minstg2.img and not Mntstg2.img as I mentioned earlier. The url address is http://www.enterprisenetworkplanet.c...nt.php/3588296. The file is very much visible by typing the url address but if you download and burn the iso image on a CD, from the location as mentioned in the howto, and start booting up with that you will be required to give the site name and directory path where you will be stuck. I request you to please check the process once by burning the CD from the boot.iso exactly from the location Carla mentioned in her howto. As for your second question, why not FC-5 or FC-6 in place of FC-4, the thing is I tried all of them with same result.

I am honoured that two senior members are taking notice of a newbie like me.

thanks to you and simon.

I think the URL is incorrect - I can't even ping www.enterprisenetworkplanet.com

For the installation of the basic operating system, why don't you follow fedora's instructions? For FC6 they are at

http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/instal...tallation.html

Possibly:
http://www.enterprisenetworkingplane...nt.php/3588296
(spot the difference)

These are the instructions he's trying to follow:
Quote:
Suppose you want to use the Kernel.org mirror, ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/. On the "FTP/HTTP Site Name" line, enter mirrors.kernel.org. To find the correct entry for the "Fedora Core Directory" line, you need to surf around on the kernel.org site until you find the one you want, which in our Fedora Core 4/i386 example is ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core...os/Fedora/base. Your entry for the Fedora Core Directory is /fedora/core/4/i386/os/.

How do I know this? I found out by trial and error, and am generously passing the knowledge on to you. Anaconda gives sort-of helpful error messages when you make mistakes with the filepaths.
Note: the filepath is not intended to be taken verbatim. You have to hunt around to find the correct directory path. Just copying theirs will not work.

My guess is that the desired mirror is:

(For FC6)
ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/fe...ore/6/i386/os/
... this is an Auzzie mirror so it will work best. The boot.iso is in:
ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/fe...i386/os/images

For FC4, it would be: ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/fe...core/4/i386/os
The required boot.iso is in
ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/fe...i386/os/images

I cannot find any "minstg2.img" anywhere. Though I've found a "netstg2.img" in Fedora/base

Absolutely not! I am not going to my expensive bandwidth for this. You are just not following the directions properly.

I'm afraid I really don't have the time for that either. Try either following the fedora instructions, or probably better, download all the CD's or DVD and install from there. Is there a particular reason to do a net install?

Curious, I had a look at the mirror being attempted:
I note that the instructions in the howto being used are basically correct, just a tad confused.

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/6/i386/os
... this would be the correct mirror to use.
Mirror = mirrors.kernel.org
Protocol = ftp
Directory = fedora/core/6/i386/os

The boot-only image is images/boot.iso ... one should burn this to a disk and boot from it as the first step of a net-install. (Alternatively, CD1 can be used.)

I have found also /images/minstg2.img here (yay). But, checking, I see no such thing in the Aussie mirror. Googling, I see that minstg2 is used for low memory ftp/http installs (or pure text ftp/http installs). The main image is "stage2.img" ... which is what should be being used.

Note:
Quote:
If you are not booting from a Fedora Core DVD or installation CD, a network installation downloads the main installation program from the network. The graphical installation program is over 75 MB in size.
Hmmm.... invoking the "minimum stage2" image suggests he's selected a text only install. Something you'd normally have to do explicitly.

Ditto that for me too.

R_N_Ghosh: you sound confused more than anything. It seems clear you do not understand what you are attempting - something quite fatal in linux. Whenever this occurs, stick to the standard stuff. Get the iso's ... you will lose only time.

If bandwidth is an issue, contact a local LUG - someone will give you a DVD to install! (Failing that, use an internet cafe.)
