Music cd's slow to mount

I just replaced my cd/dvd drive (which went dodgy) with a new one. The old one was IDE drive the new one is SATA (not that it makes any difference I had the same problem with the old drive). Now with data cd's or dvd's or dvd video's the KDE daemon pops right up asking me what I want to do with the disk just about as soon as the drawer closes, but with music cd's it takes at least 10 min. (I timed it) before the daemon pops up. I can then play the disk with Xmms or Amarok, but not with KsCD, which complains about an access error- no disk in the drive, and to make sure I have permission to the /dev. During the time I'm waiting for the disk to be recognized there is a bit of activity on both the optical drive and the hard drive. Not thrashing, but just the occasional blink of the drive lights. Anybody have a clue?

Forgot to add that I'm using F8
