ld.so.conf

I've been trying to add my paths to the /etc/ld.so.conf file but everytime I still have to execute a program or script I have to type in the full path. I have also ran $ldconfig and still same problems. Any suggestions?

If I understand you correctly, you have to specify the path for -any- command?

if that's the case /etc/ld.so.conf is irrelevant, you need to change your glabal or local shell config files to include a $PATH variable. Read the man page for your shell to learn where the config files are.

not for any commands, commands like ldconfig itself, iwconfig, but i have compiled programs from their source and those programs run fine from anywhere

I'm not sure if I follow completely, but it sounds like the problem is admin-type commands (in /sbin and /usr/sbin), so you need to add them to your path.

if you type "echo $PATH" you will have the PATH variable printed out on the terminal. I think you won't see /sbin and/or /usr/sbin there. If that's the problem, you can edit your .bashrc or .profile to include a line like

export PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:$PATH

which will add the relevant elements to your path.

Good idea to read the man pages, they will give you more succinct and accurate information than I can. man bash.
