Kernel compile error

Hi! I am new to Linux, but I like it, so I dug a little. I have Fedora Core 1 and by default, my sound card (SoundMAX) and my NIC (3c940) do not work, they are not recognized. I have an ASUS P4C800 motherboard. So I try to recompile the kernel with the drivers I need. It works fine, the result is a vmlinuz file. I try to start it with the Grub loader and I get this error: "Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format" What should I do? I enabled both a.out and ELF format into the kernel. The resulted fiel is in ELF format.

You probably compile ELF format as module. Make it permanent.
P.S. Why the subject is the compile error ??
