Exclamation I need OpenGL direct rendering on my Fedora Core 5 system

Hi all.

I have a Fedora Core 5 system with all the latest updates and a NVIDIA e-GeForce 4 MX 4000 DDR 64 MB video card installed. I have several games that each get about .5 fps because of the lack of OpenGL rendering. Where would I find appropriate software?

Support for FC5 was dropped several years ago. There have been no official updates of any kind since that time. Fedora 11 is due out this month. I would strongly suggest switching to a supported version. If you do not like to update as often you might want to consider switching to Centos. Centos is RHEL(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) with the logos removed. RHEL/Centos5.X was based on FC6, so it will "feel" very familiar to you.

You will need to install the proprietary drivers in order to use hardware acceleration. This is fairly easy to do on a supported version (install a couple of rpms) but is considerably more difficult if you have to compile them yourself(about your only option on a nonsupported version).

install fedora 10 or in a few days fedora 11 .
BUT the software repos for fedora 5 are in the archives and 4 years OUT OF DATE
and THERE is NO kmod-nvidia driver for it
in order to install the legacy ( and about to be UNSUPPORTED- soon ) gforce 4 card
you will need to install the kernel-source and kernel-header and the gcc compiler from the archives
Code:
su -
 yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
yum install kernel-devel
then the nvidia.run

see
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...65&postcount=7
for the repo hack for the archives
and for the driver

OK, then is there any way to upgrade to Fedora 11 if my BIOS is locked to boot in this order: floppy, C:, DVD?

Just reset you CMOS(pull the battery on the MB is usually the quickest way). Then you can change the boot order.

You can create a relay floppy but it is a PITA(it has been 4-5 years since I did one).

Do you mean Gateway brand or "A" gateway (as in control on your site to the internet) computer?

By (again) combo do you mean the password to the bios (resetting CMOS will wipe this) or do you mean a physical control measure? If you do not control this computer you should not be messing with the OS.

This is MY computer I'm talking about. It's a Gateway brand and I mean the key combo. It doesn't tell me. Anything else I forgot?

Google says;

Turn on the computer and immediately press either the F1 key or the F2 key at one-second intervals to enter the BIOS setup utility.

Well, Google's right. It worked! Unfortunately, the system wouldn't boot from the CD of Fedora 10 Internet upgrade I burned a while ago. What should I do know?

When you look at the DVD do you see directories or do you see an .iso file?

It's not a DVD. It's a CD I burned. I got the ISO file from a mirror on fedoraproject.org. Then I downloaded Live USB Creator and put the unextracted ISO file on a flash drive. I used my Fedora system to burn the CD. I have changed the BIOS, but it didn't matter. It simply won't work. It's not even recognized until I log in.

Ok, that means you did not just burn the iso as a regular file(it happens a LOT). Just to be clear you did burn the image(iso) and not just transfer the files and directories to the cd?
