I have problems with the Nvidia driver (185.x ?) on FC 11 x64
I have installed FC11 64 bits a few months ago, and it was working without problems. I have not used that machine for quite some time, so i switched it on again this weekend, and downloaded fixes etc. When i restarted the system, i got a nasty surprise - after some time, the only thing displayed on my screen is the NVIDA logo (which i have never seen before), and after a long time, i get a log-in, which takes ages to log me in, if at all.
I already tried a clean install, installed nvidia drivers (yum install nvidia-kmod), followed by the updates (and the second time without them); after rebooting - i get the same issues. Basically i am left with a less then stable system.
I am running on a TYAN 5396 board, dual XEON processor (2.0 GHz), 16GB ram and an 8800 video card, which used to work without problems. No changes have been made to the hardware or bios.
Try to switch to terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1) when you get at the login screen. From there shut down your display manager (for Xdm the command is "/etc/init.d/xdm stop". You just change xdm with the name of your DM). And after that do a "startx". And show us the output you get from it.
Thanks for your reply - i will give it a go tomorrow (had enough aggro with it for today). I Also tried to install SuSE 11.1 And all was fine until i tried to install the nvidia drivers - after reboot, the X system crashed, leaving me with a command line. After uninstall with Yast i rebooted without issues.
Funny thing is - on my FC11 installation, once i get the nvidia drivers installed, restart the system and then login, it takes some time. Once in, i try to run the nvidia util - and get thrown out again, to the login screen. Logging in at this point is no longer possible - system freezes. Als, i have a distortion/disturbance in the upper left hand side of my screen - as if it is writing in very small area of my display.
Just for fun, i tried to install WinXP-64, which also used to work just fine - and here i have a similar issue; regardless of the driver version i use - al is fine until i try to configure my 2nd display, which freezes up the system.
I am getting the impression that my video card might be on the blink. I will try to get another one, just to see if that works.
As stated - will give your solution a try tomorrow - and post the results here.
o - by the way - i have an 8600 type card, not an 8800. Should make not very much difference - my mistake.
If your system starts, that is already a good thing. It means that (with more or less work) it can be "repaired".

So, it works fine if you use a single display? That would already be good . Maybe you should try to also configure your linux with a single display.

So, that means that with other drivers, like for example VESA or nv, both screens work fine?

It doesn't make a big difference. For both you anyway need the same driver
Well - without the Nvidia drivers the linux installations work just fine, but i am stuck with the same image on both screens. I tried a fresh install with the 2nd display disconnected did run fine (FC11), but once the nvidia driver is installed - the problem is there again. I also started getting a message when starting up that i experienced a kernel failure. looking at the output, it suggests that the problem exists with the memory init of the video card. I will post this info along with the information requested by you.
Running with only one dipslay is not really an option - i develop java tools, and need to be able to see 4 terminal sessions and my netbeans ide at the same time - 1920x1200 doesn't cut it there, i'm afraid.
The error.txt file contains the output from stderr when running the startx command; the other file contains a kernel failure info dump - i also tried booting with noveau disabled - but the results where the same.
fhdumay, please don't run X as root. Look at these warnings:
Code:
** (gnome-user-share:3082): WARNING **: gnome-user-share cannot be started as root for security reasons.
W: main.c: This program is not intended to be run as root (unless --system is specified).
Thanks for the effort. I am still assuming it is a hardware issue - it always worked just fine, both linux and windows. I have the problem for the last week or two.
I will try installing a new card, just to see if the issue persists or not.

Before doing it
I suggest you to pl. run & boot your sys. with KNOOPIX CD/DVD it will give you H/W failure result(may be)
I don't know much about it but i have also installed FC11 on my sys.
1st my sys. was having FC10 without any display problem
but after installing FC11 it freezes on the log in screen only mouse courser's mauve but no change in the
screen I re-installed the os two times it was the same
but when 3rd time i installed with active internet connection you wont believe it it it took 36 Hrs. to install FC11 direct from Internet i really don't know how it happened but now i can log in safely but i can't play 3D game's on it
I have nvedia 7100 display card on i945gcmxs2 M/Board with 2GB RAM & 160GB HDD
I can play 3D Games on the same sys. in win-xp/vista (on different HDD)
Well - i just installed a new ZOTAC 9800 geforce card in my system - and presto - the video displays are working just fine now. I still do have kernel diagnostics (no failures), but they are related by an issue detected in the BIOS settings. They do not however, have any negative impact on me working with the system.
For all those who gave there input - thank you for making the effort.
