HTTPD:NameVirtual Host

hello,

I've got it working on Windows and RedHat 9.0 but I've no success on Fedora Core1
The HTTPD server is not recognizing my Virtual Host Setup

NameVirtualHost *:80
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.myweb.com
DocumenttRoot /var/www/html/myRoot
</VirtualHost>

I've also tried changing the * to the exact address of my HTTPD Server machine but have no luck.

Please help.

Hello,

I've got it working now. It's a couple of SegFaults again. After investigating the matter, I have recompiled myodbc source with

" --disable-thread-safe "

I've also disabled the ssl feature of Apache/HTTPD server (seems to be working fine now).

The Star,

can u tell me what the use of virtual hosts ?

I'm building an intranet site.

Virtual Host will allow you to set up different addresses and webroot dir on One machine server.

Say for example, you have a sites called
www.personals.com located in /var/www/html/webpersonal
and another
www.office.com located in /var/www/html/weboffice

each webroot (webpersonal/weboffice) can have their own index files and stuffs - as if two different domains but actually found in one computer.

To successfully set this up -- you need to know some things about DNS and configuring the clients to recognize the DNS Server.

The Star,

Just a Follow-Up.

Setting up a virtual host will allow you to specify different location of a site's webroot path other than the default /var/www/html.

You could set up www.personal.com to path /usr/wwwpersonal
and www.office.com to path /var/www/office

Of course, you have to ensure the permissions are set correctly for apache to be able to access the subdirectory contents.

I haven't tried setting different webroot paths in Linux yet. But, it should work just as it worked for me in Windows.

Hello The Star,

There are many docs found at www.linuxdocs.org. I should be a good start for every newbie.

In MS Windows I use a free program called Jana Server (www.janaserver.de) to serve as DNS.
