Getting Apache to work

I have fedora core 6 installed with the apache server. I have been trying things out and I wanted to learn how to get a webserver up and running. I have a dynamic ip address, on college campus and I am accesing the internet from behind a firewall.

1. Can I get this webserver working so that if I enter my computers ip address 172.xxx.xxx.xxx into a webbrowser from another location I can access my site. ( I want to do this so I can access files on my computer while I am home for christmas)

My understanding is that because my computers ip address is unique while I am online in theory this should be possible.
I know my ip address changes everytime I connect to the internet but if I left my computer connected the IP address would not change???

Thanks for your help in advance. I am just a newbie to webservers so sorry if the questions are a bit weird I am learning.

172.x.x.x is a private address, not routable. You would need to setup port forwarding on your firewall to get access to the server. Take a look at reverse vnc and reverse ssh tunneling if you do not have access to your firewall config.
