Question Fedora core 4 and libf2c

let me prefix this with a disclaimer: I am a noob and I searched as thoroughly as i could and read as much source as i could understand before posting this question.

I am trying to compile a source package (for electronic band structure calculations) and there are detailed instructions on editing the makefile to point to specific static libraries. Fedora core 4 (workstation option) did not include liblapack, libblas and libf2c. I used yum to install liblapack and libblas from the default repository, but i could not find libf2c. I eventually found a repository at CERN for scientific linux, and added it to yum.repos. yum reported that it installed sucessfully, but I cannot locate where it installed to.

I found some discussion of this being a general issue with FC4 in a forum (which it will not let me post here)
however I did not find the answer, or at least the answer was too cryptic for me to understand, and the problem may be more systemic in nature.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to solving this?
I'm sure this is only one stumbling block on the way to getting my software installed, and there are sure to be more.

Greg

su
locate libf2c

If locate does not work. Read a little and find out where it installs and then check there.

OK thanks, I should've been more clear thought, I used locate to find the liblapack and libblas,
locate liblapack
/usr/lib/liblapack.so.3
/usr/lib/liblapack.so.3.0
/usr/lib/liblapack.so.3.0.3

etc.. and added the path to these libraries into the makefile
#LOCALLIBS = -L/usr/local/lib -llapack -lblas -lf2c
LOCALLIBS = -L/usr/lib/ -liblapack -libblas

but all it returns for f2c is the location of the rpms, and not the static library that I need to link to and it is definitely not in the directory where the other libs are.

locate libf2c
/var/cache/yum/linuxsoft-slc4X-updates/headers/libf2c-3.4.4-2.i386.hdr
/var/cache/yum/linuxsoft-slc4X-updates/packages/libf2c-3.4.4-2.i386.rpm
/var/cache/yum/base/headers/compat-libf2c-32-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.hdr
/var/cache/yum/base/packages/compat-libf2c-32-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.rpm

I don't know how to open an rpm so i can read it.

of course, as I said, I added the repository to retrieve it in the first place, and did a yum install, and if I check it to verify I get:

yum list libf2c
<<progress bars removed for clarity>>>
extras : ################################################## 2266/2266
Added 64 new packages, deleted 557 old in 22.85 seconds
Installed Packages
libf2c.i386 3.4.4-2 installed

So that is the problem.

can I just take a copy of the libf2c.so.whatever and paste it into the /usr/lib directory?
