fedora 7 installation unexpectedly ruwined !

ok....very, very odd situation. i started the system with a live cd so i could post online and i really hope someone could help. i've had a flawless fc6 and fedora 7 installation so far but today i boot up and the rc.d dir in etc and several other files are just ...gone.the kernel unpacks, boots up and the just drops me to a login shell in read only mode. all my data is intact but those conf files are just missing...it's bizarre. a day or so ago i aded /sbin/modprobe pcspkr to rc.local because the speaker module didn't load after the 2.6.22 update but i booted a couple of times normally after that. init.d from etc seems to be missing as well. thoughts anyone ???

Disk dying - file system screwup?
I'd try to copy the missing files from the live CD.

not really an option,i'm using the xubuntu desktop cd. i can't even install xubuntu because gparted won't recognise my sda2 partition. pretty much all i can do now is format ...i'll try getting another hard drive to install a distro to and save some data.
