Using Fedora 28 64-bit and it locks up every time I use it. Not immediately, but never know what's going to make it lock up. Just scrolling down a webpage can do it. Have been using Fedora since 10 or 11 and have never seen such poor performance as I'm now getting from 28. Anyone have any idea what's going on with 28?
I have the exact same problem. System just randomly hard locks until I hit the reset switch. I've tired to figure out what is causing this, but I just don't have a clue. At first, I thought it was a power option gone bad. 7/10 times when my pc goes to sleep the issue occurs. However, outside of that it just happens randomly. I could be writing a post, reading a .pdf, surfing the web and "BOOM!" hard lock. The only time I have never experienced this issue was when I've been watching a movie or playing a game.
There have been a couple of threads on this recently - see this for example. Check the linked bugzilla, or maybe just do an update and see if it pulls in a fixing kernel.
I haven't seen similar, but my F28 system is currently barely used.
i have been running a Fedora 28 system for the last week without any lock ups. I am running the Xfce desktop environment. Typically "lock ups" are caused by poor drivers or poor processor support. Can you post your hardware specs and then maybe we can see if there are any bugs with the latest Fedora 28 kernel?
Post some of your hardware specs with these commands:
Did you try using an Xorg session with GNOME instead of the Wayland session? Ryzen CPU are known to have lock up issues with Linux, but I am unsure which models and if it has been resolved. You also have an ATI graphics card that could be the culprit. I suggest you start your research on the topic in those areas. It could just be a small tweak to the kernel boot parameters might fix potential ryzen bugs. You could also use the AMDGPU x11 driver (if there is one) for your graphics card instead of the radeon open source graphics driver that comes with Fedora.
I'll switch to Xorg for a bit and see that that changes anything for now. Personally, I have never had an issue with AMD, or MESA up until this latest implementation of Fedora. On that note, I haven't really used Wayland until Fedora 28 either, so heres hoping!
Yeah let us know how it goes. I know on my system with 16GB of RAM, GNOME 3.28 + Wayland uses A LOT of RAM compared to GNOME + Xorg. I switched to Xfce because I just cannot be writing to swap with a SSD just because my GUI is so RAM resource intensive.
UPDATE: So approx. 24 hours in (give or take, not really counting) and I can say that it was Wayland causing the issue. The issue has not reoccurred in anyway what-so-ever.
I think it is about kernel fixes for CPU security bugs.
I've rollback from FC28 to FC27 due to that freezes, but got same freezes on FC27 too.
Once I've rollback to previous kernel version, freezes gone.
I've been getting the "Hard lock" bug in Kernel 4.17.12. However, the amount of times this occurs has been dramatically reduced after switching to Xorg from Wayland.
