FC6 and grub

I can finally install fedora since FC 6 release (had problems with my previously unsupported GA-965P-DS4 mobo). Problem is, grub hangs. I have 2 disks, a 300gb windows xp and a 160 gb fedora. I asked fc6 installer to put grub at the start of the 160gb disk (not the MBR). When I change the bios to have 160gb disk as 1st, the word 'GRUB' comes up and hangs. Putting the 300gb disk as 1st in bios boots XP ok. I booted from FC6 rescuecd and looked at anaconda.syslog. It has load of read/write errors to /dev/hd6 whatever that is. I don't even know how to begin fixing this. Any ideas? The 160gb disk is fine - i have used it previously.

Update the BIOS to have the 160 gig first then either:
i) re-install and write grub to the MBR (of the 160 Gig - won't touch the other disk),or
ii)just reinstall grub from the rescue

Your problem is probably because you did the install to the "second" disk, but it's the "first" disk when you boot from it.

Tried that, doesn't work. When I begin the install - just before the partitioning bit - it says there is a table problem on one of the disks and would I like to fix it. I have tried both yes and no here. When the installer is presumably writing to the MBR I get read/write errors to /dev/hda6. Sorry about the vague error reporting - I will go back and get more precise error messages if you think it will help?
