FC5 slower after yum update

Hi all,
I'm using FC5 since January.
After installing, I followed the Stanton Finley guide to configure my PC. So I updated all typing
Code:
yum -y update
and Fedora startup became slower, very slower.
On my PC Win XP startup takes about 1 minute, the original installation of Fedora took about 3 minutes. After the update it took nearly 7 minutes! I've tried to switch to the old kernel but also the old kernel was slower.

Now I've switched off some service I don't use (for example sendmail) and I have misured these times:
  • Bootloader 0 s
  • Start splash screen 37 s
  • End splash screen 85 s
  • Login screen 130 s
After typing password:
  • Password screen 0 s
  • Start small splash screen 24 s
  • Desktop appears 86 s
  • Small splash screen ends 165 s

Full startup takes about 5 minutes but this is a lot of time.
Most of all I wonder why it hangs on a black screen for 45s just before the login screen appears? If I'm right, before the update it was not hanging on so much.
It's normal that after typing password, the loading of Window Manager doesn't start immediately?
And why loading Window Manager and Nautilus during small splash screen takes so much time?

First, I notice that your distribution is listed a Fedora Core 4. So you might try a yum upgrade instead of update (and without the -y so you get a chance to say "no" if you don't like what you see.) That should get you the latest FC5, which tends to boot faster (but see below).

You don't specify your hardware, and a lot of "boot time" can bee hardware related. (For example, my Win XP system, with 9 HDs, boots in less than 1 min. But that's a 3GHz box with a gig of memory. If I boot Knoppix on that system from a DVD it takes about the same minute.)

And here's the "kicker" about FC5: check out the hardware requirements before upgrading, since they are much more stringent that they used to be in FC4.

I'm sorry, I forgot to update my profile!
I'm already using FC5.
Anyway, the point is that fedora became slower after upgrading some of the software (I'm very disappointed for not taking any log when upgrading ). Without any hardware change.
Anyway I've got a Pentium 4 on a Asus P4C800 Deluxe, HD Quantum Fireball 7 GB, ATI Radeon 9600, 512MB of RAM.

Also when I launch applications it takes more time than before the upgrade, i.e. when I launch the Terminal I wait 20s to have it ready!

Strange. I just timed a terminal request on my system (ASUS P4P-800S, 1G ram, Intel 686 3.06Ghz, nVidia FX5200, IDE drives using LVM. [I do use KDM, not GDM, but not because of any speed issues.]) and it took less than a second.

Oh: uname -r gives 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp (Since I had a terminal open.)

Wait one: That was on KDE -- Let me try GNOME.
O.K.: Also less than one second.

Consider installing more RAM, or, at least, checking your swap file usage. (I've never see any swap usage.)

Do you have prelink enabled? I think it is on by default.
