FC5 Ethernet Device enumeration problem

Hi:

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this problem.

I've got a motherboard with two PCI-based Ethernet devices built in - a via rhine and a Realtek 8169. These devices both work under FC5, but whenever I reboot, the base address of the 8169 changes (as reported in /var/log/dmesg). The base address of the via rhine device is consistent. The effect is that sometimes the 8169 ends up being eth0 and sometimes it ends up being eth1. As you can imagine, this makes cabling rather difficult!

Does anyone have any ideas on this? This board will be used in a high volume product, so specifying the address of each Ethernet device in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx is not a great option. I could change the names with "ip link set ..." but I'd rather understand what's happening. Under FC3, the board works fine and dmesg reports consistent base addresses for both devices.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

in the ifcfg files for your interfaces you could try putting in a line containing the mac address for your inteface e.g.
HWADDR=<mac address>

this should tie the configuration to one specific physical device.
