FC3T3 printing: test page works but can't print from apps

Hello all,

I have installed two printers on my Fedora Core 3 test 3 system using system-config-printer:
  • Lexmark Optra R laserprinter on /dev/lp0
  • Lexmark Z51 color inkjet on /dev/usb/lp0
I can print a test page from the config program on both printers. However, I am unable to see the printers from a program like thunderbird. All that it listed as available printer is Postscript/default. When I print to this, nothing happens. Have I forgotten a step somewhere along the line? How do I make the installed printers visible to the applications?
