Hi, John VV. I would do this, but why would the problem go away? If I want k3b to have its mp3 codec, won't I have the same issues? It would be good to know what installed the fc12 libfaad, so I could resolve the conflict, but I don't know how to identify the existing dependency. What command to I run to find out what is depending on libfaad on my system?

Hi, John VV.
I would repave my system, but prefer to resolve this issue first, in case it propogates to fc14. If k3b under fc14 still requires rpmfusion codecs and if these are still attempting to install fc11 libfaad, then I am no further ahead. There is enough work in upgrading already, without piggy-backing little mysteries like this. How do I find out what has installed/depends upon the fc12 libfaad on my system, do you know? I have never needed to do this, AFAIR.
Cheers,
Doug

Mixing repositories can be problematic, be they related to Fedora or any other distro. You do it, and you're on your own. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. When it doesn't, unless someone has come up with a work-around for your particular situation, the only guaranteed useful advice you'll get is, "don't do it."

Here's my advice - remember, no guarantees (see previous sentence):
1. disable all but the Fedora and rpmfusion repos
2. yum remove libfaad2
3. yum install k3b
4. install any other apps that you lost at step #1 that you want

When you replace F12 with F14 next week, I urge you to strongly consider step #1 above.

Doh! So stupid not to have thought of this simple solution myself. Sigh. For the sake of any lurkers, when I uninstalled libfaad2, it uninstalled mplayer, gnome-mplayer and gnome-mplayer-common. I successfully installed k3b-extras-freeworld and k3b no longer complains about a missing mp3 codec. I then reinstalled gnome-mplayer, which brought back mplayer and gnome-mplayer-common, but did not try to install libfaad2. Gnome-mplayer is working satisfactorily, although I get a warning dialog
Code:
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
It plays all my clips OK, so I am not worried. Yum search libvdpau_nvidia turned up no hits, so it must be something benign to do with my system (Lenovo T61).

Thanks all for your helpful comments.

Note: the mplayer error is fixed by this solution, by opening gnome mplayer, Edit/Preferences and setting Video Output to xv.
