FC 6 video display problem on first bootup
Hey all--
It's that time again with more Linux questions for you. My PC is as follows:
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Sapphire X1900XT 256MB (not the beefy 512)
Seagate 250GB 7200.10 HDD
NEC DVD Burner
Mushkin DDR800 at 4-4-3-10
Blah blah blah...
My problem is with Fedora Core installation, first of all. If I try to configure my packages at installation, I get errors with tty. If I don't worry about configuring, and just want to install the stupid OS because I'm sick of having to reinstall Linux distros, it installs fine. So, why does it give me that error with trying to configure the packages at installation time instead of configuring them later?
Second problem... I have installed FC6 on my system using the bare minimum with the install (just wanted to get it on the drive). I went to load it up, and it started to boot OK. It went through the "Welcome to Fedora Core 6." But when it started to go through to the next screen, I get a TON of video noise. I cannot see the image, though I know there is an image there. The screen has a ton of lines all over the place and my monitor makes noises. This, in my experience with PC hardware, means I have a bad video signal. But what I don't get is that the GUI installer was fine, even though I know that's a little different. So, how do I fix this issue with FC6? Is this a problem with Fedora and my X1900XT? Or is this a problem with Fedora all together (I don't have good experience with FC...Slack is much nicer...)
Any ideas?

How did you type that in when the monitor is all messed up? Did you switch to runlevel 3? If so, you must have done it when GRUB was up. What is the command to make it boot in runlevel 3?

pressing alt+ctrl+f1(to6), will give u virtual consoles, type the command now.
no need to got runlevel 3
if u wish , init 3 is the command to switch

I actually didn't have an error upon installation the second time through. The first time, I got an error just like I normally would with Fedora Core 5. With FC5, I would get dependency problems, such as "Could not install xxxx due to a dependency issue." With FC6, when I went to install some of the software myself (chose to configure KDE, GNOME, some C++ development and kernel development software), it threw an error stating tty was already in use. There was a pop-up window that said to either Retry or Cancel. But when I click Cancel, it rebooted the machine. Retry would only generate the tty error. Since I have had this problem before with Fedora Core 5, I figured they didn't fix it. So, I went for a second time, and just did a typical bare minimum install (using only Garbage NOME and some Development packages). The install went OK, as I didn't have any problems, and the system went down for a reboot. When it came back up (at the GRUB screen), I selected Fedora Core 6, and it continued to load. Then, after it said "starting udev", the monitor clicked, I saw a TON of lines all over the place, and my monitor giving a bad screeching noise. This usually means a bad video signal coming from the computer. So, I tried to do what you said earlier, and do a ctrl+alt+F1 through F6, and the only one I could get working was F1 and F7. F7 contained my messed up video signal, and F1 had the boot stuff (starting udev) in SUPER HUGE font. But, I couln't type anything into the terminal. I figured F7 was waiting on input from me until it finished with the First Time Boot.
I've always had problems with FC. SUSE and Slackware have been the only ones I have had good dealing with. Oh, and kubuntu.
Any suggestions?

FYI - I had the same problem on a Dell E521 (2GB ram, 250GB HD). Install from DVD seemed to go fine until it rebooted, then my monitor says it can't handle the video mode (it's a 19" Dell flat panel). Couldn't get a usable monitor window either. Finally gave up after 3 tries and installed Suse 10.2 - which works just fine. Too bad - I've been a Redhat supporter since 1995.

The easy way to boot too run level 3: When the GRUB screen is displayed, press the "e" key to edit (temporarily, for this boot only) the in-memory boot commands. (If you have the "hidemenu" option turned, press the "Esc" key to display the menu.)
Then, add " 3" at the end of the "kernel=" line, and remove the "rhgb" entry in that line.
Then press the "b" key to boot from the modified in-memory lines.
Note: Sometimes the in-memory image looks corrupted. If this is the case, press the "c" to go into "command line" mode, and then the "Esc" key to go back to where you can type the "e" again. This "fixes" the in-memory lines.
