/dev/modem link deleted at boot

In Fedora Core 4 I have set as root the link

ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem

to use my serial modem. It worked fine, but on the next boot in FC4
this link was no longer there. So, after every boot I have to set this link
again. Why is it deleted?

you probably need a newer driver.

The "problem" is udev, as stated in the similar threads below.
I have added the link command to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. That solved the problem.

On the other hand I have tried adding a new udev rule file, but did not work.

Although you might want to install a newer driver anyway...

This is an external serial modem. Thus, no driver is required. What do you mean by a new driver?

you may want to check this out, especially sec. 2.3

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html

although 'normally' it is understood that external (serial) modems with linux do not need 'drivers' per say.. this seems to be more of a school-of-thought from the past.

linux STILL needs all the other software (drivers) necessary to both access and utilize newer type-- external/serial type modems.

good luck again, and let us know..
