console font and charset issue

I have Fedora with Oracle 9i database installed. I installed sqlplus client 10g on the same machine and I am able to connect and issue sql statements. Whenever I export the result of sql statement into a file (via spool), I am not able to view some romanian characters. I run the system on level 3 and according to /etc/sysconfig/i18n my console font is latarcyrheb-sun16.
If I install the same sqlplus client on another Fedora machine with the same console font as above, I am not able to see even the the results of sql statements within the sql prompt (
again romanian characters). The ORACLE enviroment variables are the same (NLS_LANGUAGE IS AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII and NLS_CHARACTERSET is AL16UTF16) for both Oracle clients.
Is it an issue oft console font or console charset translation? Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!
