Can't Play CDs or DVDs

Something has happened and I don't know what, so I hope someone here can help me. At the moment for some reason I can no longer play CDs with XMMS or DVDs with Xine or Mplayer. I could when I first installed FC5 and set these programs up. I don't recall doing anything that would have changed this, though obviously something has happened. It is not the drive because it works fine in Windows, and when I put in an audio CD Totem pops up and starts playing it. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Hi

I have had the same issue in the past and it turned out to be that somehow the media device for these applications got changed. In xine, go to settings and then to media. Check and make sure that the correct /dev/ file is point to your CD/DVD drive. In most cases, it will say /dev/cdrom, but you may have to look in your etc/fstab file and see what your system notes your drive as (i.e. /dev/hda or /dev/hdb, as will be the case if you are using SATA hard drives.)

Do this with the settings of any media player that will not find your CD/DVD device.

Hope this helps

Bob

I finally got around to checking this out last night. I was able to get a CD to play with xmms doing what you suggested and finding the correct path. But it only did it once, then locked up. Now Totem will not even play cds. Anything that has to deal with the drive seems to be having problems.

I am still all that knowledgable about linux, so what should the fstab file say? Here is what mine has:

/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
