Red face automounting cds/dvds

How do you automount cds/dvds in Debian sarge. The tips given by greenfly.org don't seem to help.
the dvds/cds show up in konquerer explore as mounted cdrom/dvd even though the cds/dvds are not in the drive.clicking on the icons show blank
thank you gang

You can use automount. It will make a folder for the cdrom that disappears when it's not in use.

Edit: Did you look at the autofs guide at greenfly? It is the same thing.

First, depending on what you put in the autofs config, it could take a minute or so for the drives to appear unmounted (I set it to a few seconds so I don't notice). If that is not the issue then it is some sort of kde problem. I heard that kde sometimes keeps stuff from unmounting properly, but i don't use it some i am not sure,

Debian Sarge comes with udevd and hald enabled by default, if running on kernel 2.6.8+. These two packages allow you to use gnome-volume-manager, which automounts media when inserted. Basic functionality is in place.

Word of warning, though... hald (hardware abstraction layer daemon) is alpha software (according to sourceforge). Why is Debian _stable_ shipped with it on by default, I do not know. Anyway, even though gvm and hald work, they seem to crash every now and then though not too often to render them unusable. It is, however, quite irritating to be forced to reboot to make use of your usb stick or cdrom drive.

Hi Basileus
Thanks.
I'am using debian sarge final(JUNE 2005) and updated. Gnome does automounting quite well, but since i use KDE, i would like to have automounting in KDE. I did exectly according to automounting article by greenfly ( www.greenfly.org ), but autofs folder/drive shows as MOUNTED cdrom even when there is nothing in the drive.
I'am looking in to Xandros/ linspire as to how they have done it. If you manage to get something, please let me know.

regards

Nelson
