For sueno;

First, I cannot say which filesystem your FC4 partition is, but knoppix normally mounts all the partitions it can access. So the partition may not have any problem, it could be a matter of permissons or a slight differnece in the reiserfs version or the mountpoint does not exist.....

For blas, sueno and any one else;

Thumbs up Yay I got my system back

ok I got it working I used the fedora core 4 rescue cd it got my system back and it wasn much trouble after all.
I downloaded the image from the internet and burned it via Knoppix and got the system working again and it was very easy just when I thought of it.
Thanks for your replies and all the help I have gotten from this forum.

Post I should have been happier

Ok I guess that the time I managed to start up my computer was just luck. Because the next time I rebooted, about a week later to clean a fan on the mother board that was being noisy again. A few days later after struggling with moving my data to another hard drive I reinstalled the system but after the install the system would not boot either and it stopped at exactly the same place in the boot as I have described earlier.

The fan had been annoying me with its very loud noise so I took the mother board to the shop and had the fan replaced when I had taken the board back and screeved everything back together and now the system works like charm.

My suggestion is that if you really think that you have the same problem I had you should check your hardware, are chip sets(in my case) getting enough cooling and so on, are all the fans working as the should and is everything ok with the hardware.

The most incredible part about this problem is that I was able to startup Knoppix from a live CD but not the FC4 system which makes me wonder if the chip sets change their behavior in a way that FC4 can't handle but Knoppix is quite fine with.

B.T.W my mother board is an MSI K8N Neo /sli and the North bridge fan was broken

Sorry for my late reply and not being more help
