Trying to print to wireless networked printer at the office, and although the printer recognizes my attempt (I can hear it warm up in response) it does not actually follow through with printing.
I have had this issue on Mint 18.3, as well, and I eventually figured it out. Though I have no idea what I did to get it working.
We do have a code in order to print in color, but otherwise, there is no password required. I don't know what I'm looking at on the CUPS error log, but authentication is mentioned a few times.
I've scoured Fedora's documentation looking for a solution, and now I'm completely hypnotized and ready for a 40-year nap.
Hoping this community can help me find a solution. Thank you!

Well, there isn't a lot to go on. You say Fedora, but don't tell us what version, and don't tell us anything about the printer, what you have at home that DOES work, or what you're trying to print. You hint at color, and a code to print, but we can't tell if those enter into the picture or not. We cannot guess.
I've never heard of a password to restrict printer options. Have you talked with the person(s) in your office about these problems?
They're not that uncommon on larger devices like the big Xerox copier/scanner/printers. Accounting codes to release jobs, or restrict who can do what. Typically, they involve the driver on the PC itself to send the code along, so it (usually) needs a proprietary driver to function correctly.
*SOMETIMES* the printer will be smart enough to queue the job until the person goes to the device and inputs the code on the keypad.
Hi everyone, and thank you for responding.
I'm sorry, you're right. I didn't give much detail to go on.
Fedora 30, upgraded from 29. The printer at work is a RICOH MP C4504. I was able to connect to it from an installation of Mint 18.3 on another machine.
I attempted to print a test page from the print dialog. The printer could be heard to respond, it just didn't print. The code is only required if color ink is requested, which a test page would request. There was no dialog to enter a code. (Didn't expect one).
At home, a Brother MFC-J5520DW was working harmoniously with Fedora 30 when I left this morning, but now that I'm home, it`s no longer working.
The print settings GUI states that the "Printing service is not available. Start the service on this computer, or connect to another server" . I used the "Start Service" button to attempt to do so, and it failed. The error message I received when trying to connect to the server is "CUPS server error - There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'failed to connect to server' Using the "connect" dialog does not work, either.
I read something last night about the Brother printer drivers putting a particular thing needed by CUPS in the wrong place. But I didn't understand it when I read it, and can't remember where it was (another post here, maybe).
Thank you for the suggestion about contacting our office tech support. I'm hoping he will be of some help.

Your CUPS service may be stopped. Try running:
Code:
sudo service cups start
, and see if you can then print at home...at the very least, you will see SOME output, even if CUPS isn't starting. Reference this guide for troubleshooting printing problems on Fedora: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_t...nting_problems
And according to Ricoh, that printer is supported under Linux; I'd suggest contacting Ricoh support for the correct driver and/or installation instructions. You may also want to look on a Windows system for the relevant .ppd file, and copy it to Linux. That's a standard printer-definition file, and *SHOULD* let you get to some of the more advanced features like the 'enter-a-code-for-color' option.
At work, instead of a test page, try to open a regular text file in any editor and click "print", and see if it comes out in black and white.
Thanks, TB0ne. The command did start the service, and I am able to print from home.
I will review the info you suggested and see if I can figure out why it doesn't start at start-up. Also will check with Ricoh and see if they can help me.
I will mark this solved for now, as the spring selling season has begun and I will likely not have time to fix this until say...November, lol!
