acpi

Hi,

I've read numerous other threads on this subject, but none seem current or have a solution that works for me.

I've recently acquired an ASUS X59GLseries Laptop. To start with I had to update the BIOS to get the nvidia card working.

The current problem can be split into two, but probably both depend upon the same issue. Basically when I shutdown the system gets to the 'Halting System' line and then decides to spew off and ends with:
Quote:
...
SMP alternatives: switching to up code
cpu1 is down
Power down
acpi_power_off called
(I thought I had it all, so i'll amend soon!)
Then it waits forever or until I hold the power button down for five seconds.

There's loads of threads concerning the 'acpi_power_off' line and i've tried many methods. Mainly centring around editing 'menu.lst' and adding any of the following:
Code:
acpi=off
acpi=ht
acpi=noirq
acpi=strict
(see)
No method actually shuts down the machine properly, and all but the 'strict' option disable the mouse / touchpad after restarting.

I've also tried to turn 'acpid' as a service, to no avail.

So that's the main problem... Any ideas?

Part 2:

However when I start up, sometimes the screen is dimmed, so I use the 'Fn' milarky to brighten it up, but when logged in I:
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq
1200000
but,
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
2000000 1600000 1200000
How can I set the speed to full, preferably permanently (there is no BIOS option).

Cheers...

You did not mention which disto you are using. In CentOS the FREQUENCIES value can be tweaked in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed.

Also, within grub.conf I have noacpi set.

Sample
Code:
title CentOS (2.6.18-92.1.18.el5xen)
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 console=xvc0 noapm noacpi nofirewire nopcmcia noaudio nofloppy noirda nodhcp vga=771 panic=5
        initrd /initrd-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5xen.img

Hi Harry,

Yes that does seem to let it shut down without intervention, it looks like it still complains, but, i'm not for now.

Just had a look at '/etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed' and going down for a test now.

I've also just updated and got a new kernel. Now even if the LCD was dimmed and me re-brighten it, or not, it then re-dims every time when doing the Plymouth init thing. Any idea?

Yes oops, current distro is Fedora 10, might do a clean install with 11 at the weekend.

Cheers.
