Question XP connects to proxy server Debian will not.

I have a Debian box setup as a proxy server using SSH/Privoxy.

I have another PC (Client PC) which dual boots Windows XP and Debian Etch and uses Putty to make the SSH connection to the proxy server. I'm trying to use the proxy server to browse the internet.

I can make the SSH/Putty connection no problem under both operating systems and I can browse the internet fine with Firefox while in Windows BUT when I try to browse from Debian/Firefox I get a page in Firefox that comes up and tells me the proxy server is blocking the connection. I do not have a firewall installed on the Debian Client PC. I have Firefox set to use 127.0.0.1, port 8118 as the proxy server which is what I have Firefox set to use in Windows XP.

Also, just for the heck of it I installed Opera thinking that it may be a problem with Firefox but I ran into the same problem with it as well. Has anyone got any ideas as to what may be causing the problem?

How are you making the ssh connection on the Debian system? What's the command line you're using? When connected, can you telnet to localhost 8118 and get a response?

I'm using Putty to make the SSH connection. I make that connection succesfully. I haven't tried to telnet to localhost:8118. I'll give that a try tomorrow, I'm not near the client PC right now.

It's normally a pretty easy, straight forward setup. Once the SSH connection gets made on the client PC the only thing left is to input the correct proxy information in the browser (127.0.0.1 port 8118). I'm able to connect via SSH, so I'm at a lost as to what is stopping me from browsing. And since XP browses fine with the same setup the server itself has got to be working properly.
