XFree86 not working, "no screens found"?

Hey, I'm new to the whole linux experience, and these forums, so forgive me if I'm doing things the wrong way. Anyway, here is what has happened so far.

I set up a dual boot system with Debian 3.0r1 and XP Professional and started learning a bit about the the command line and how linux is set up. I wanted to have a look a some GUI stuff, so I installed XFree86 using apt-get install x-window-server. It prompted me for some configuration settings, which I entered in, and then rebooted. When I rebooted, I was still at the command line, so I tried to start the GUI with both the xdm and startx commands. They seemed to work ok, except for the fact that it would stop at the end of the start-up sequence and say something like "Screens found, but no useable configuration".

I figured this meant I had stuffed up the configuration, so I tried to reconfigure it the best I could using both xf86config and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, but neither made any difference to my problem. The closest I could to it working was by using xf86cfg, which gave me a GUI interface, but I couldn't use my mouse to move around, and when I tried to configure the mouse using the keypad pointer movements, it just crashed.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, here is the hardware I'm using (I only included what I thought was relevant):

Leadtek Winfast Geforce 2 Ti
Mitsubishi Diamond View 17'' Monitor
IntelliMouse Explorer USB and PS/2 compatible (It's in the PS/2 port).

i don't know if you need nvidia drivers, for geforce but i think so. follow nvidia.com instructions and get the binairies. You could also do apt-cache search kernel|grep nvidia. After installing drivers do XFree86 -configure , edite the generated file to replace the drive by nvidia driver and then follow the rest of instructions

Can you post the (EE) line(s) from the x log, e.g less /var/log/XFree86.0.log | grep EE ?

I managed to get mine working by doing the following:

1. Use "XFree86 -configure" to get X to try and automatically find the best configuration for you.
2. Manually edit the configuration file in /root/XF86Config.new to fix up the problems with my IntelliMouse Explorer. I used the following options:

Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux/"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons "no"

This got the mouse working but except for the two buttons on the side (hey, it's a start).

3. Copy the XF86Config.new into /etc/X11 as XF86Config-4 (remove the old one).

4. Reboot, and hopefully everything will work.

it should be driver issue, try to use Nvidia own drivers to replace nv driver of xfree86.

You have a gforce 2 ti right? (or did I miss something) Try this:

Try setting your driver in the XF86Config to:

Driver "vesa"

Then install the nvidia drivers per their instructions. The reason I say vesa instead of the "nv" drivers is that I have not had very good luck with debbie/nv---mileage may vary. (Probably it has something to do with the fact that agpgart is not a module(in kernel)---when I do a /sbin/modprobe agpgart--it responds that it doesnt exist)

But then I have Slackware on the brain...

Have fun

- try deleting the depth 1 4 15 from Screen section
- $ lspci # look for pci number of the radeon an put in Device section:
BusID "PCI:XX:XX:XX" or use dpk-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.

the best way to drive xfree86 is to use drivers came from Nvidia. I noticed you are using very new video card, just go to their site to sure the current released drivers support your card.

Guys !!!!!!!!

flashingcurser gave you the work arround for this issue

I had the very same trouble with a gForce 4

Set your drivers to 'VESA', That will get your xserver up and running, then afterwards you need to upgrade your video drivers.

For nvidia drivers upgrade you will need to compile a new kernel since the default debian installation will not install the kernel sources needed by the nvidia driver installation program.

To reconfigure you XFree86 setting you can use the debian front-end:

bash# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

or directly edit:

/usr/X11/XFConfig86-4

I used 'vim' text editor to edit the file.

bash# vim /usr/X11/XFConfig86-4

To get your X working try the following:
First do some updates:

apt-get update
apt-get install x-window-system-core
apt-get install xfce
apt-get install xterm

Then install your X:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Choose Vesa-Driver.

Then answer the questions the best you can, if unsure with any of the questions leave it default (also if it's blank).
When you're asked for the screen resolution be conservative, and when you're asked for your horizonal and vertical screen sync rate be honest!!

After that reboot and startx.
