X refuses to kick in. rootless related?

Hya,

System
Debian/stretch 32 bit on this hardware.
console log in, then startx.

Situation
After dist-upgrade, X refuses to kick in.
Last upgrade was July 2015.

xinit upgrades 1.3.4-1 to 1.3.4-3

Troubleshooting.
Xorg.0.log reads:
Code:
.
.[ 2575.537] (--) using VT number 7

[ 2575.537] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 2575.537] (EE) xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (Permission denied)
[ 2575.537] (EE)

This thread
suggests something like
Code:
xinit -- /usr/bin/Xorg vt1
Current situation
With the trick above, X kicks in. But still long way to go.

I will update.

cheers.
