Wireless woes

I'm a linux newb and I'm having all kinds of trouble setting up all kinds of things. I've been reading and googling like crazy, but I just can't seem to get my wireless set up. I have Sarge on an Omnibook XE3 and I'm trying to use a Gigafast WF721-AEX(the Rxxx version) card to get on my home network. There just seems to be roadblocks everywhere I turn.

I've tried following this guide but compiling a driver is making my head spin. I am so lost about those types of things. I also saw the suggestion to use ndiswrapper and the XP driver. I got ndiswrapper and it seems to be working ok and I thought I ran the driver through it, but my laptop still doesn't seem to see it.

The system knows there is a card there:
Code:
debian:/var/log# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  no product info available
Socket 1:
  product info: "Realtek", "Rtl8139"
  manfid: 0x0000, 0x024c
  function: 6 (network)
debian:/var/log#
but it does nothing. I'm at a loss. I don't even know where to start. Somebody please throw me a life preserver!!

http://thegoldenear.org/toolbox/unic...ian-sarge.html has a Wireless Networking(Wi-Fi) section. He also makes reference to http://www.hpl.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/ Hope this helps. Good luck.
PS you can check LQ debian forum Sticky: Debian Configuration Post-Install page6 for discussion of wireless setup on notebook.

OK, the goldenear link looks pretty promising. I think I brought on another problem though. As per the link, I installed the wireless-tools package and now when I try cardctl ident, it tells me "no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices". The laptop used to recognize the cards when I'd plug them in, but no more. Furthermore, there is no file or directory named devices in /proc. Any ideas on what is wrong?
